29/30 December 1940: The London Underground on this day 75 years ago

One hundred and fourteenth day of the London Blitz

At 17:33 on the 29th a barrage balloon cable fouled the District line track at the Cromwell Curve, between Earls Court, High Street Kensington, and Gloucester Road stations. Trains reversed at West Kensington, Parsons Green, and South Kensington.[1]

Blackfriars station was reported as being on fire at 18:30.[2]

Incendiary Bombs (IBs) hit the Bakerloo line London Road Depot (between Waterloo and Lambeth North) at 18:44, but no damage was caused.[3] At 22:15 trains in and out of the Deport were suspended due to a bomb in the vicinity; clear by midnight.[4]

District line services between St James Park and Mansion House stations were suspended at 18:45 due to the floodgates at Charing Cross (now Embankment) station being closed.[15] Services resumed at 11:21 on the 30th.[6]

St Paul’s and Bank stations were closed due to fires in the vicinity of each at 18:46 and 18:57 respectively, while Tottenham Court Road station was closed at 18:52 due to both fires and bombs nearby.[7]

The windows of Whitechapel sub-station were damaged by blast at 18:51.[8] At 19:30 glass in the station itself was broken.[9]

IBs on the East London line track at Rotherhithe at 19:00.[10]

At 19:15 South Kensington station roof was damaged by IBs.[11]

The Central line Wood Lane station, between Shepherd’s Bush Acton,[12] and the adjacent bridge over Wood Lane was set on fire by IBs 19:25.[13] [14] Central line services suspended between Ealing Broadway and Queen Road (now Queensway) stations.[15] Services between Ealing Broadway and Wood Lane, and between Queens Road and Liverpool Street, resumed at 07:44 on the 30th.[16]

Widened Lines services were suspended between Farringdon and Aldgate and east of Farringdon were suspended at 19:15 due to dangerous buildings adjacent to the track.[17] At 20:30 a staircase through the Widened Lines at Aldersgate (now Barbican) station) was on fire.[18]

The roof of Moorgate sub-station was badly damaged at 19:25, and the whole structure subsequently destroyed by fire.[19] Moorgate Street station evacuated at midnight due to adjacent dangerous buildings.[20]

At 20:30 Chancery lane station was closed due to bombs in the vicinity, but reopened at 21:00.Bank station ticket hall was damaged at 20:49.[21]

Also at 20:30 an IB on a Hammersmith & City line train cracked windows in it.[22]

Signalling was affected by bombs on the track between Whitechapel and Shoreditch at 21:00.[23]

A bomb through the District line tunnel between Westminster and Charing Cross stations damaged cables and the track, and blocked the latter with a girder and other debris, at 21:32.[24]

The Great Northern & City line between Finsbury Park and Moorgate was suspended at 21:40 due to the failure of traction and signalling current between Drayton Park and Moorgate.[25] Services resumed at 15:05 on the 30th.[26]

Old Street station closed at 21:55 due to fires in the vicinity.[27]

Aldgate East signal cabin on fire at 23:16.[28] Services suspended between Mansion House and Whitechapel.[29]

At 23:20 the lifts at London Bridge station were on fire, and in danger of falling down the shafts.[30]

At 08:00 on the 30th, the following working conditions were reported:
New damage and changes

District: Suspended St James Park to Aldgate East – tunnel damage (not serious) between Westminster and Charing Cross. Dangerous buoldings at Blackfriars and Mark Lane.

Metropolitan: Suspended Kings Cross to Aldgate East.

Great Northern & City: Spuspended – current failure.

Central: Suspended Queen Road to Ealing Broadway – damage at Wood Lane.[31]

27/28 December 1940: The London Underground on this day 75 years ago

One hundred and twelfth day of the London Blitz.

At 19:00 Incendiary Bombs (IBs) on Surrey Docks (now Surrey Quays) station and sub-station were dealt with by staff, and so caused only slight damage.[1] [2]

A High Explosive bomb cratered the track at Surrey Canal Junction at 19:36. Services suspended between Surrey Docks and New Cross Gate.[3] [4] [5] Service resumed at 17:30 on the 29th.[6]

IBs on New Cross station some time before 20:40 caused a serious fire, but only Southern Railway services were affected.[7]

At 08:00 on the 28th, the following working conditions were reported:
New damage

Bomb damage at New Cross.

East London – services suspended to New Cross.[8]

23/24 December 1940: The London Underground on this day 75 years ago

One hundred and eighth day of the London Blitz.

At 19:45 on the 23rd four High Explosive (HE) bombs fell in the vicinity of the joint LMS and Metropolitan line tracks near Neasden station, with a crater between the north and southbound local roads displacing both tracks, and damaging the up fast line negative rail. At Neasden Depot there was damage to No. 22 Siding, Nos. 11 and 12 shed roads, and a concrete roadway. In the engine room at Neasden Power Station at Quainton Street, No. 10 turbine and auxiliary equipment was damaged, but another five generators remained operational. Four staff were injured.[1][2][3][4] All services were suspended between Willesden Green and Wembley Park, with services on the fast lines resumed at 22:30. A temporary bus service operated between Willesden Green and Wembley Park between 22:28 and 22:45, and all services were normal from the start of traffic on the 24th.[5]

At 08:00 on the 24th, the following working conditions were reported:

Neasden power station, one generating set affected.

8/9 December 1940: The London Underground on this day 75 years ago

Ninety-third day of the London Blitz.

At 19:30 on the 8th a bomb through the Metropolitan line tunnel near the canal bridge between Baker Street and the disused Lord’s[1] stations cratered and scattered debris on the track, and damaged the positive rail. Three High Tension feeder cables between Neasden Power House and Baker Street sub-station were also knocked out.[2][3] Services suspended between Wembley Park and Baker Street until commencement of traffic on the 9th, when services were resumed under a speed restriction.[4]

A fire damaged the station canopy, the booking hall, and two retail units at Mark Lane station.[5]

Northern line services between London Bridge and Clapham Common were suspended at 21:03 due to an unexploded bomb in Kennington Park Road.[6] Suspension later restricted to Moorgate to Kennington.[7] Services between Moorgate and London Bridge resumed at 13:52 on the 9th, and between London Bridge and Kennington at 16:28.[8]

Between 22:30 and 23:20 District line services between St James’s Park and Mansion House were suspended due to bombs falling near the tunnel at Blackfriars.[9]

Widened line services between King’s Cross and Farringdon Street were suspended at 02:10 on the 9th due to unsafe buildings adjacent to the track.[10] Clear for LPTB traffic by 12:15 on the same day.[11]

At 08:00 on the 9th, the following working conditions were reported:
New damage

Land mine near London Bridge dislocating Southern and Tube services; hope to clear it during day.

Services restricted

Northern Tube suspended between Moorgate and Kennington (LM London Bridge).
Waterloo & City line closed due to flooding from damaged mains.

Eighty-ninth day of the London Blitz.

From 08:00on the 4th northbound Bakerloo line trains reversed at Queen Park, while southbound services reversed at Harrow, with the bus service between Queens Park and Willesden still in place. Through services resumed at 10:00, and Queen’s Park station reopened at 16:50 on the 4th.[1][2]

Normal working resumed at Holloway Road station – closed since 14 October – at the commencement of services on the 5th.[3]

3/4 December 1940: The London Underground on this day 75 years ago

Eighty-eighth day of the London Blitz.

Northbound Bakerloo line services reversed at Paddington from 22:03 on the 3rd due to High Explosive damage at Queen’s Park. The down electric line was buckled, and the up line covered in debris, but the LMS fast lines unaffected and working as normal. Services suspended between Kilburn Park and Willesden from the start of traffic on the 4th, and a replacement bus service introduced.[1][2]

At 08:00 on the 4th, the following working conditions were reported:
New damage

LPTB damage at Queen’s Park. Services suspended Queen’s Park – Willesden. Probably resumes today. Bus service in operation.[3]
